Bangkok’s most popular gay bars and dance clubs are located in Silom, in or close to three streets – Soi 2, Soi 2/1 or Soi 4.
We’ve sorted our 2013 round-up into sections.
Silom Soi 4 – Home to some of the most famous gay bars in Bangkok.
Silom Soi 2 – As Soi 4 winds down, Soi 2 gets going. This is where you will find gay dance club DJ Station and bars that stay open way into the night.
Silom Soi 2/1 – The destination for many who want to party a bit longer, particularly at the weekends.
Other Areas – Fancy a change of scene? Check our list of gay bars in other areas of Bangkok.
Soi Twilight – Bangkok’s gay ‘red light’ district and home to many go-go bars.
Soi 4 is the place to see and be seen. Confidently strut your stuff along the street, choose a bar and find a table with the best viewing position. Unless you are eating, the best entrances are made around 10pm. All the bars offer an ‘at seat’ waiter service. Pay when you are ready to leave. Nearest BTS station is Sala Daeng (Silom Line – S2). Nearest MRT Station is Si Lom.

Probably the most famous gay bar in Bangkok – certainly one of the oldest bar which has been around for 25 years. Telephone Pub & Restaurant (aka Telephone Bar) has been serving drinks and good food since 1987. Originally, each table in the bar had its own telephone from which customers were able to call another table. Of course, things have moved on since then. Today, there is internet access and Skype video calling!
Despite this technological leap forward, most people go to Telephone to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat before heading off to DJ Station. Telephone Pub also features a karaoke lounge on the third floor, complete with 3 huge video screens and over 6000 Thai and English songs choice. A private karaoke rooms is available for hire. Free WiFi and regular special events.

Another very popular bar and restaurant in Silom Soi 4. The Balcony offers indoor and outdoor seating (on both sides of the street). There is also an upstairs bar and karaoke. Waiters offer an at-seat bar service and serve a range of popular Thai dishes and international ‘fast food’ such as burgers, pastas, steaks, etc. The Balcony has an extensive drinks menu at reasonable prices. Free ice and standard mixers are offered with a purchase of any bottle of spirits. Regular cabaret nights and special events on public holidays. Open daily. Happy hour between 5:30pm and 8pm.

Directly opposite from Telephone Bar, Bearbie is the number one bear & chubby lounge bar in Bangkok. Bears (both Asian and Western) and their chasers come here to chill out, have a few drinks, sing karaoke and make new friends.
Despite its ‘bear heaven’ reputation, Bearbie’s prime location in Soi 4, combined with its friendly atmosphere means that it attracts a broad cross section of the gay community. Bearbie opens at 7:30pm, is busy most nights of the week and packed at weekends. Table reservations accepted. Closed Mondays.

Located at the (quieter) far end of Soi 4, opposite the Sphinx restaurant, this intimate bar opened in 2008 has a well-earned reputation for mixing some of the best cocktails in Silom. Bas squeeze all their own citrus juices fresh each day and use only top quality spirits. Management also keep a stock of some rather nice wines as well. These excellent drinks are served up in a relaxed atmosphere along with good selection of music. Perfect for small get-togethers and those looking for a less busy spot.

Sugar Bowl, a gay-owned terrace bar and restaurant, located towards the entrance of Soi 4, is rapidly gaining a reputation for some occasional fun party evenings. It’s known for excellent funky house music that tends to attract a mostly straight foreigner crowd – although Tapas does has a ‘mixed’ vibe, especially on the weekends. The ground floor bar is open nightly. The second and third floor are only open on Fridays and Saturdays and feature guest DJ’s (entry fees apply). Daily drink promotions and occasional special events. A fun alternative choice to start off your evening.

“Eat. Drink. Man. Woman.” (named after a famous 1994 Taiwanese film directed by Ang Lee) is a new coffee shop located at the entrance to Soi 4. Find this coffee shop and you have found Soi 4. The redevelopment of this corner building is welcome improvement on the decrepit and derelict structure that has blighted the entrance to Soi 4 for so many years. The coffee is pretty good too.

Small, laid-back, straight-friendly bar where you can enjoy watching live broadcasts of your favorite sports on large TV screens – be it football, tennis or golf. For Sports also has a music jukebox for you to enjoy. Open daily from 5pm – 2am.
Soi 2 has a surprisingly narrow entrance that is easy to miss. Minimum age for entry is 21. If you are lucky enough to look younger than 30, then we recommend bringing photo ID – particularly if you are Asian. The bars in Soi 2 get busy from around 11pm onwards. Tank tops and shorts are fine, but flip flops are not allowed.

DJ Station is the most popular gay nightclub in Bangkok, attracting a wide range of Thais, foreign residents and visitors. It’s busy every night of the week and packed solid on weekends. Tourists are usually charged an entrance fee (200 baht) but are given coupons for two free drinks (which would cost 100 baht each anyway).
Westerners and Asians who want to mix with Westerners tend to head for the second floor. The ground floor, particularly around the stage, tends to be more popular with Asians who prefer Asians. DJ Station heats up quickly and tops come flying off. Sweaty muscular bodies dance the night away. Nice, very nice. Squeeze in around midnight. 9pm to 2am officially, but usually stays open later.

Formerly known as G.O.D. (Guys On Display), G Bangkok is one of the best gay dance clubs in town. There are three floors although, even on busy nights, most people tend to stay on the ground and 2nd floor. Harder dance music is delivered by talented DJ’s that quickly get the muscle-packed dance floor and stage heaving.
Gets busier after 2am as DJ Station starts to wind down. Entrance fee (usually around 300 Baht) gets you two-drink tickets. G Bangkok is also ‘home’ to DJ Spectrum K – who we think is the hottest Resident DJ on the Bangkok gay scene. Here is the latest mix of his excellent work (uploaded June 2012).

Soi Twilight (or to give the street its correct name – Soi Pratuchai) is a gay ‘red-light’ entertainment street, located off Surawong Road (almost directly opposite to Patpong). The street is home to a number of go-go dance bars that cater almost exclusively to foreign tourists and is a very different experience from Soi 2 or Soi 4 in Silom.
Go-go dancer bars have shows every hour or so, that can be fun to watch – if not taken too seriously. The content can range from erotic dancing to routines that leave only a little to the imagination. In host bars, you pay for the company of a guy by purchasing both yourself and him a drink and then tipping him when you leave.
