We recommend staying in or near the historic city centre. Hotels located between the Truc Bach Lake and the Hanoi Opera House or west as far as Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and Temple of Literature are in a great location. Most of the main sights can be reached on foot, which is useful as the traffic in this fast growing city is appalling and taxis are notoriously unreliable.

Why this hotel: Apartment style. Well-appointed rooms. Great location.
Most gay travellers will be familiar with the Somerset’s aparthotel concept. You don’t get the glitz and glamour of the Metropole, but you do get a washer & dryer, separate lounge and free WiFi.
If you are in Hanoi after visiting other parts of Vietnam or Laos, then the ability to wash and tumble dry your knickers without paying excessive hotel laundry charges could be attractive.
Location-wise, the Somerset is just of the edge of our preferred area, but the Old Quarter is still within walking distance.
