Manila does not have as many hotels as you would find in other Asian capital cities. Hotels in the 3- or 4-star category may fall short of expectations and the choice of 5-star hotels is relatively limited.

Malate district is located at the southern end of the city of Manila, bordered by Manila Bay to the west and Ermita district to the north. Some of Manila’s best gay night-life can be found in Malate near the intersection of Maria Y. Orosa St and Julio Nakpil St.

The Manila Hotel is a Philippines landmark in its own right. It was originally developed as part of a 1898 urban plan for Manila. During World War II, it was home to General Douglas MacArthur. In more recent years, the hotel has had numerous famous guests including Bob Hope, Marlon Brando, Senator Robert Kennedy, Charlton Heston, John Wayne, Vice President Richard Nixon, Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Today, the city has many newer and more luxurious hotels, but the Manila offers a heritage, style and charm that others cannot match. The hotel sits on Manila Bay which is just north of Malate district and close enough to the gay scene there. The popular Hotel H2O is next door and also worth considering.
