All gay men dream of chilling out (or perhaps more accurately, grilling out) on a tropical island beach. In Thailand, those dreams can come true.
Many head to the well-known islands of Phuket or Samui. These popular islands offer both beaches and a gay scene. Pattaya or Hua Hin are great for a weekend getaway from Bangkok.
The laid-back island of Samed is the closest ‘beach holiday’ island to Bangkok. Samed’s white sandy beaches attract gay tourists and gay Thais from Bangkok who also enjoy nights out at the gay/mixed Silversand Bar.
Finally, we have the ‘away from it all’ island destinations. These islands are harder to reach but offer some of the best tropical beaches. The islands are ideal for romantic couples and those who only need a good book. You may meet other gay travellers, don’t expect to find any gay venues.

About Koh Chang
Koh Chang is the second largest Island in Thailand (429 square kms) and one of the most beautiful with long sandy beaches and relatively few tourists. The island is also home to a wide selection of wildlife including elephants.
Whilst the island is significantly less developed that either Phuket or Samui, there is a wide range of activities including snorkelling, diving, jungle hiking and various beach sports.
The best beaches and most of the resorts are located on the west coast. White Sand Beach is the most developed and modern area. Kai Bae & Klong Prao have a more tropical island feel with a quaint village appearance and quirky shops. Most of the gay-friendly venues are located here, though the scene is very laid-back and non-commercial. Lonely Beach & Bailan are a backpackers’ paradise with cheaper bars and affordable restaurants. The best time to visit is between October – April (outside of the monsoon season).
How to Get There
Bangkok Airways operates a regular service between Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and Trat (on the mainland close to Koh Chang) Minibus transfers are available from Trat airport to resorts on Koh Chang.
Various bus services operate from Bangkok and Pattaya to Laem Ngop (the pier from which most ferries sail to Ko Chang). Alternatively, book a limousine or taxi from Bangkok. The journey time is about 6 – 7 hours including car ferry and drop-off at your resort hotel on the island.

About Koh Tao
Koh Tao is a great place for divers or travellers who want an ‘away from it all’ island beach destination.
Koh Tao is ranked number two worldwide for issuing of PADI certificates. Many operators don’t have pools, so initial dives are done in shallow, crystal-clear ocean water. There are hardly any currents, a wide selection of dive sites and plentiful amounts of coral and marine life.
The west-facing Sairee Beach is longest and most popular on the island, great for watching the sunset and for kayaking to Koh Nang Yuan. Chalok Baan Kao Beach is also popular with many travelers. There are many smaller beaches with only a few guesthouses that offer real peace and quiet and excellent snorkelling sites directly offshore. Although frequented by many gay travelers, Koh Tao has no obvious gay scene. There is but one ladyboy cabaret show in Sairee, behind Sairee Plaza, called The Queens Cabaret.
How to Get There
Fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui, then catch a ferry (Lomprayah High Speed Catamaran or Seatran Discovery) to Koh Tao. Alternatively, drive or take a bus or train from Bangkok, Phuket or Hua Hin to Chumphon Pier and then take a ferry to the island.
