In Tasmania, they discovered what is now Rainbow Retreat by accident after visiting another nearby property. They immediately fell in love with the stunning natural environment and amazing ocean views.
Peter and Ian built their own house and then three self-contained cabins for visitors, along with an animal rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary.
Each visitor cabin has a double bed, armchairs in front of a wood burning stove, a dining table and fully equipped kitchen area with a gas cooker and fridge. The TV, lights and hot water are all solar powered. Rainwater is collected from the roof of the main house and stored in gravity feed tanks to provide the Cabins with a water supply for showers, washing and the toilets.
But it is the breath-taking ocean views and an abundance of wildlife that really makes Rainbow Retreat a special place.
The wallabies will be waiting outside your door (Peter helpfully provides a tub of special feed) and you are almost certainly going to see wombats and possums. The location is a great base from which to explore Tasmania’s north east coast line, including the nearby Bay of Fires and stunning Wineglass bay.
Rainbow Retreat is an eco-retreat in every sense. Don’t expect the facilities you would find in a hotel. However, Peter and Ian will charge your mobile phones and laptops in the main house. Drinking water and supplies for a continental breakfast are provided and the fridge is stocked with wine and beer. And if you choose, Ian will prepare a delicious home cooked dinner and deliver it to your cabin.
This remarkable ‘away from it all’ that has nature quite literally knocking on your door (the wallabies!), managed by a quite wonderful gay couple.
If you visit Tasmania, make sure you plan to spend at least two nights at Rainbow Retreat.
